Locomotive in Otto Kuhler painting

February 01, 2009 06:17PM
Of all my grandfather's various railroad possessions, his prized piece, aside from his Pullman, was a painting by famed locomotive designer Otto Kuhler titled "Frosty Morning in Platte Canyon". What I've always wondered was what the locomotive type was in the picture. It's clearly of the Denver and South Park, as evidenced on the tender (pictured below), and its a 2-6-0 numbered 61. Since Kuhler was a locomotive designer, I've also considered the possibility that its a fictional locomotive created by him for the painting. Can anyone fill me in?
