With a lack of football and Nascar racing going on tonight I thought I would start a topic that I think gets far to little discussion on this board, the SP narrow gauge.
For a quick refresher, the SP operated a portion of the former Carson and COlorado railway until April 1960. They even dieselized it in 1954. THe following attachments will take the reader on a quick tour of the existing roadbed from Mina south to Keeler. I have been able to visit the area at least once a year for the past 2 decades. The pictures therefore range from the 80's until last year. There is an abundance of remains both in equipment and structures if one knows who to talk to and where to look. I hope someone finds this non Rio Grande roadbed interesting.
This was the Mina freight depot and it was torn down in the 1990's. The Sp operated into Mina until the 1980's. It was founded in 1904 as a railroad town and was the northern interchange from standard to narrow gauge until 1938.
As of my last visit to Mina in about 2000 this wasreally the only railroad structure remaining, the ice house.
This is the site of one of two large bridges on the line into Candelaria. Pictures of this bridge are in Ferrell's SPNG book.
