I was just thinking that there has been so much debate on whether the larger K's ever got green boilers and if so what was the color. I know that in 1949 when the 499 was used to pull the Rocky Mnt RR club it was stated in many books that the Salida shops crews turned it out with a green boiler. The link shows the 499 in Salida prior to the run. My question is if it indeed did have a green jacket is the color darker than people would often think. It doesn't appear to be as green as what the D&S has turned out over the past few years on the 482 and 478 and the cylinder covers are not green but appear to be black. Could it be that the color the Grande used was indeed a very deep color that would almost look black. It is really hard to tell in black and white photo's. I'll have to check some of my books at home to see if I can find any color pic's of this excursion. Is there really any photographic evidence of what color of green the Grande used on their boiler jackets? Any insight will be appreciated.
