Recent stuff from the Land Of La Veta Steam.
Retired D&RGW engineer Carl Jack and his family rode with us earlier this month. Carl ran 483 helping 473 on the last trip over Cumbres in Dec. 1968. He ran 483 back the next day making him the last D&RGW man over Cumbres. In 1980 Carl ran the last D&RGW train to Silverton. Here Carl poses with his latest great grand baby.

with one hand on the throttle and the other on the sader valve, John Charles keeps 18 or her feet as we fight out way up the hill on the slick rail.
Last week the freight dept. called for help. An engine went down headed west and they had to set out some cars in La Veta. We helped out by moving a few empties west over the hill.

a bit further around the curve past evidence of snow that fell early in the week. This train was closes to maximum tonnage, but 18 pulled it very well with nary a slip.

This week the nightly freights have been leaving mid-afternoon and meeting the passenger train on the road. Usually we meet them at the bottom of the hill at Sierra, but on one day they got a late start and we made this meet at Blanca.
