1968 was a particularly bad year for steam...NdeM quit the use of s.g. 4-8-4s and n.g. 2-8-0s just before the Summer Olympics,Magma Arizona replaced steam with ex-Medco Baldwin diesel 8 in early September and Hillcrest Lumber Co. on Vancouver Island, British Columbia ceased the 2 day a week use of 3 truck Climax 10 on or about August 28th. One of the very last machines to come out of the Corry, PA plant, she survived a 1947 runaway, was rebuilt and ended up hauling finished timber products between the mill @ Mesachie Lake and the E&N connection in Lake Cowichan. She would also back about 3 miles to the Western Forest Industries mill @ Honeymoon Bay & take care of their loads & empties as they no longer had a locomotive that was serviceable. Harry Wright, George Watson & Preston Belcher were some of the last Hillcrest people around her. Harry is still with us and we stay in touch.
