Alpine Tunnel "memory" and exploration question

A comment and a question:

I am sad to say I have only had the pleasure of visiting the Alpine Tunnel once back on a family vacation in the mid or late 70's, but I do have a fond memory from the trip: On the way up, we spotted one of the then still up telegraph poles; we were puzzled to hear a clacking sound almost like a telegraph key - it turned out to be a woodpecker hard at work on the pole. Somewhere my dad has a picture of this latter-day "key operator" tapping out a message...

Now for the question:

I my net research a year or two ago I came across a web site with a log and pictures from a expedition (of specially equipped spelunkers, I believe) who had actually entered the tunnel - I want to say this was supposed to be the mid-to-late 90's or early 2000's. Is this true and is the web site (or a version thereof) still around?
