RGS #41 and it's "Tank Pit"

Howdy folks,

I'm doing research of RGS #41 presently, and I came across an interesting notation that has me confused. In "The RGS Story Vol. XII" on Page 80 there is a notation about the #41's "tank pit" being painted mineral red. First question, what is the "tank pit"? Is it the top of the tank where the water hatch is, or the coal bunker? Second, does anyone know if it stayed red when she was shopped and painted in the 1942? That seems to be when the sunrise herald was applied. Thanks.
