car load transfer crane

August 04, 2008 07:33PM
Trivia. In various photos I have noticed what appear to have been two car load transfer cranes in Alamosa - one in the NG to SG (or vice-versa) transfer yard basically across the yard from the depot, and a second one just West of the Freight House. John Maxwell's drawing on the 16 ton transfer hoist is of a permanent structure, so being permanent were there really two of them as I have observed. As of a few years ago there was a mobile crane in the area of the old transfer yard, but I assume that this was a new piece of equipment and not historic - kinda' looks similar to Maxwell's drawing but on rubber tires (probably for transfer between RR cars and trucks?). I am not talking about the big unwheeling hoist by the roundhouse. My question is were there indeed two permanent car load transfer hoists one located in the transfer yard and a second one over by the Freight House or was there really only one at a time and it got relocated at some point?
Thanks in advance to whoever has the answer for me.
