Where were the K36s/K37s used

I had read recently, that for a time, the Rio Grande had elected to use K-37s on the line over Cumbres with the K-36s being used elsewhere on the system, for the most part. The reasoning , I read, was that the K-37s could pull 1 more car over the pass than the K-36s. Can anyone elaborate on this? When did this practice start and when did it end, etc? Why did it end?
