By now most people have noticed the lettering on the 489's newly painted tender, which was done with a freight car stencil instead of the much larger proper tender stencil. I'm guessing that will get corrected in the normal course of events. It is nice to see a flying Rio Grande on a tender again.
Why not paint the flying Rio Grande on all the tenders and use a magnetic overlay with the flying Cumbres & Toltec. This is not my idea, somebody else posted it some time ago. It is the reverse of what has been done lately. This is a win win idea because it provides the tourists with a flying C&TS to take home in their pictures, and it provides the freight charter photographers with a more realistic tender lettering that does not have the noticeable edges of the magnetic overlay (which really shows up in glint pictures, and the other kinds of esoteric pix that folks tend to take on the photo specials).
Is there a downside to this?
