I like checking the new picture that is now posted every couple of days, their all classic railroad pictures but todays picture has me puzzled. I recognized the 1880's consolidations and the location, La Jara, but what puzzles me is each engine has a second tender! I know that quite often auxillary tenders were used to increase water capacity and I think I may have seen a picture of them being used on the Farmington branch but no where else. The freight cars look large, they seem to be standard gauge which was common between Alamosa and Antonito by use of idler cars. Could it be a transfer of tenders of maybe the second one has tripple coupler pockets which was also common on both narrow and standard gauge Grande engines (including at least one Alco diesel). The Denver Public Library information lists the engine numbers and the date, 1923 but nothing else.
Can anybody clarify me on this wonderful picture?
