Just gotta comment on today's (June 10) photo of D&RGW 223... This is my favorite of the last 4 operational C-16's on the Grande (yeah, I know about the 283 on the NCNG, but that's in California...) It dosen't have the gingerbread of the 278, but her lines are classic (and it's the "last*" Grant lokey left... ) and of the three existing engines she's the most likely to be restored back to operation. According to the DPL, this picture was taken on July 4, 1940 at Gunnison, CO. The interesting thing was that she was retired later that year, and never wore the "Flying Rio Grande" herald. Happy 4th of July!
* Mal Farrell once told me that he climbed all over her while she was on the platform at the D&RGW depot in SLC and couldn't find a single casting that was marked "Grant". Since the Grande was infamous for switching parts over the years, she may be a Grant in name only...
