East Broad Top opening day

A photographer for the Altoona Mirror spent part of Saturday afternoon at the East Broad Top, where it was opening day, and she's posted all 340 photos to the paper's Web site. The pictures don't have captions, but you'll recognize No. 15 on the train, the M-1 on the turntable, the homemade (and recently restored) M-3 flanked by Lee Rainey and general manager Stanley Hall, track speeders, the boxcar that the Friends are reconfiguring for passenger service, the interior of coach 8, &c.

Unfortunately the crowd had dwindled by the time the last train ran -- it was a brutally hot afternoon -- so she didn't have lots more kids to shoot. The good news is that the line for the first train was so long that two more cars had to be added to the consist.
