How are U. S. tourist railroads dealing with the high fuel costs for their oil burning steam locomotives? Just wondering what measures the different lines are taking.
Are they burning #2 diesel oil at $4.00 per gallon; #6 heavy oil at $3.00 per gallon; or reclaimed, filtered motor oil in the range of $1.50 per gallon? I'm talking about lines such as SL&RG in Alamosa, Colo., Yreka Western in Calif., Roaring Camp & Big Trees in Felton, Calif., Sierra Railway, Jamestown, Calif., Sierra Railroad, Oakdale, Calif., California Western at Fort Bragg, Calif.
Also, what about the cost of coal for Durango and Chama? What does a ton of coal cost nowadays, delivered?
