Use of Combines on D&RGW

Hi Guys
The D&RGW run a number of Combines, But where and how did they run them in a train, like were they attached singly to the rear of goods trains or were they run in passenger trains along side other passenger coaches? and what would the average number of coaches a passenger train contained. I know the train lengths of the last named passenger runs, its the general use of coaching stock say before ww2 I am after.
Thankyou all for your help, this is a great site for information.
