D&RGW 315 (todays picture)

I've got a question about 315. During much of her career on the Grande she had a "shotgun" straight stack, and was the only C-18 to have one. See Today's picture for an example. Apparently late in her career she got a tapered stack, like all of the other C-18's Anyone out there know the story?
