Dan Ranger sent this to me other day, said it was taken at Cumbres in Oct, 1984.

I looked through my timebooks and came up this the following:

Sun. Oct 14
in 900am
Train #2
488 - D. Martinez
11 cars & 0306
cold rain, snow, etc...'
stop at Coxo for water and steam

Train #4
488 - D. Martinez
10 cars

Drive To Chama
out 700pm
10 hrs.

We ran the boxcars out of Chama then. The standard train was 12 cars including the open gon - about 210 tons. This day we had the 0306 along and left one of the other cars behind.

488 wasn't very healthy then and we had some cronic steaming problems. Several trips that fall noted stops to blow her hot and get up water.

Antonito train would have been a combination of box car coaches and new coaches in the red & cream Circus Paint.

My fellow engineman was Dale Martinez. He was also a promoted man, so we shared engineer duties, trading back and forth through the day.

Back then we worked through to the opposite terminal and drove passengers the other direction in our then almost-new 1983 Ford vans. On this day, after arriving up in Antonito, I drove a load of passengers back to Chama, tieing up at 700pm - 10 hrs on duty.

Dig them "flat tire 8's" on 488's cab....
