Sept 31 - Oct 1, 1904 on the RGS

November 08, 2007 03:14PM
Train leaving Telluride for Rico.

RGS engines #2 & #10 leaving "ayr 5" in Telluride?
Boxcar D&RG #3613, 5 tons of "merchandise" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3036, 5 tons of "merchandise" bound for Ridgeway.
Boxcar D&RG #3660, 21 tons of "sand" bound for Grand Junction.
Coalcar D&RG #8237, empty bound for Vance Junction.
Boxcar D&RG #3627, 5 tons of "??????" bound for Denver.
Coalcar D&RG #9067, empty bound for Vance Junction.
Boxcar D&RG #4471, 21 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3485, 23 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3403, 20 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3743, 19 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3200, 23 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #9468, empty bound for milepost 54?
Caboose RGS#0404

The train poceeded to Vance Junction and dropped off all of the cars except boxcars #3613, #3743, #9468.
Then they added the following cars on to the train at Vance Junction.
Boxcar D&RG #3699, 24 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3441, 5 tons of "merchandise" bound for Rico. (This car was dropped off here on the previous day buy the same crew - see earlier post).
Boxcar D&RG #3396, 5 tons of "merchandise" bound for Coke ovens.
Boxcar D&RG #3202, 5 tons of "merchandise" bound for Rico.
Boxcar D&RG #3170, 18 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.
Boxcar D&RG #3172, 23 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.

Once it was made up, the train headed up grade towards Lizard Head. Train stopped at Matterhorn and the conductor broke the seal on the right side of boxcar #3441 "by mistake". Train the travelled to milepost 54 and dropped off Boxcar #9468. (my map does not show a siding at milepost 54 - but this was 1904 and the map is 1913.)

Down grade towards Rico and the train stopped and cut out boxcar #3396 at Coke Ovens siding.

At milepost 63 the train picked up :Boxcar D&RG #3569, 23 tons of "ore" bound for Durango.

At Rico the train delivered all of its cars and from what I make out this trip started at 7:30 AM and ended the next night at 1 am - does this sound reasonable for an RGS train?
