Don Richter's favorite engine? (NNG)

This morning, at the bottom of every page on the NGDF there is an "Image from the Denver Public Library Western History Collection". The photo shows a standard gauge 4-8-2 with the number 449 visible on the cab. Is this D&RGW #1449, with the leading digit hidden somehow? Why is it being displayed as part of the page frame? Is this Don's favorite engine, his new avatar, or some kind of Hallowe'en ghost? eye rolling smiley
