Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Resume Service to Silverton

Durango, CO –The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will resume its Service to Silverton on Friday, July 27, 2007 after a large mudslide north of Needleton prevented the train from carrying passengers past Cascade Canyon. The mudslide occurred sometime late Saturday, July 21 or early Sunday, July 22 at No Name Rapids, which is approximately 34 miles from Durango.

Railroad Maintenance of Way crews have been working since Sunday morning with bulldozers and a track hoe to clear the slide, which was estimated to be 30-40-feet deep, 100-feet wide, and 200-feet long and was made up of mud, boulders, and trees.

The railroad’s morning patrol discovered the slide at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Sunday and trains were then held at Cascade Canyon, which is 26 miles up the track from Durango. Service to Silverton has been suspended for five days, although excursions to Cascade Canyon have been available for all passengers.

Trains will leave Durango for Silverton on Friday at the normal departure times of 7:30 a.m.;
8:15 a.m.; 9:00 a.m., and 9:45 a.m.

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been in continuous operation since 1881. The D&SNGRR operates authentic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotives through the remote wilderness and high-mountain landscape of the San Juan National Forest in Southwest Colorado.
