Urgent help request for C-16 #278 *PIC*

March 20, 2007 04:16PM
Here is some additional news on the restoration of #278 and a way which you can help. Some of you might recall a post I made about 4 months ago regarding the deplorable condition of C-16 #278. (I have again posted a pic at the end of this message.) At that time I requested that people write or email a gentleman named Forest Frost, a Natl Park Serv employee who is responsible for procuring the restoration funding for #278. There was a great response to this which he can use as justification for getting the funds.
However, he recently contacted me again asking for help from the railfan community because a method of raising funds has just made itself known. I will only include here his suggested methods for helping with this effort. If you can spread the word about this it would ensure that the work gets done. A few minutes of your time could mean that this treasure will get the attention it needs. This needs to be done online before April 2nd!
Thanks!
Rob Lenicheck

Note from Forest Frost Forest_Frost@nps.gov">(Forest_Frost@nps.gov):
You can help save the D&RGW 278! As you may have heard, President Bush has proposed a funding increase for the National Park Service to prepare the parks for the 2016 National Park Service Centennial. I'm writing to let you know about comment opportunities for the public. In Colorado there are two public meetings meant to determine what the public feels should be priorities in the parks. Those unable to attend can also post comments at www.nps.gov/2016 between March 13th and April 2nd. This is the opportunity for those interested to pass along their concerns about the condition of the Denver and Rio Grande train cars at Cimarron Colorado (Curecanti National Recreation Area).
There are two meetings scheduled for public input:
One meeting is in Durango Colorado on Wednesday, March 21st at the Lyceum Auditorium at the Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. The meeting is scheduled for 5-7 P.M.
The second meeting is also Wednesday, March 21st at the Bergen Park Conference Room on the second floor of the Sheraton Denver West Hotel at 360 Union Blvd. in Lakewood Colorado. That meeting is also scheduled for 5-7 P.M.
For online comments, go to www.nps.gov/2016. Click on "Comment on Future of Your National Parks, Now". Then click "Open for Public Comment" and "Discussion Questions for National Park Centennial Initiative" will appear. Read the page and click "Comment on Document". Referring to Topic Question # 3, state that you want to see a complete, historically-correct restoration of the D&RGW engine #278 and its train in the Curecanti National Recreation Area.
