I seem to recall somewhere that the handrails on D&RG cabooses were originally black.
The switch to white was made for safety reasons, then silver was used in later years.
How's that for non-specific?
The roofing material used on cabooses, like passenger cars, was indeed black but would fade to a dark gray over time.
