While final passenger counts are not yet official, both railroads report good seasons. The RGSRR had approximately 10,000 riders, which RGSRR President Ed Ellis expected in the first year. The C&TSRR had about 38,000 riders, which is 20 percent higher than Frank Turner, president of the C&TSRR management team, anticipated.
The effect the railroads had on each other, however, is not clear.
In February, representatives from both railroads, along with members of the press, were on the maiden trip of the RGSRR from Alamosa to La Veta and back. During that trip, Turner commented, “We will bring more riders to this train and Ed will bring more riders to the Cumbres & Toltec.”
At the close of the season, Turner noted, “There was not a significant impact, but we did get a few riders (from them), and I think we gave them several.”
Leo Schmitz, executive director of the C&TSRR Commission, said he was not yet aware of any impact the RGSRR may have had on the C&TSRR.
RGSRR President Ed Ellis said, “We did in fact bring in some business for the Cumbres & Toltec, but we didn’t bring them as many as we would have liked. There were a number of track speed issues down there.”
