I have friends who also joined the Rio Grande Historical Society and the RGS Historical Society too and they too, have received nothing in return. Starting a historical society seems like a good way for someone to obtain some hobby money for their own use.
There is one good one out there, the D&SL Historical Society, that puts out a very good publication.
