Uintah Snow Fighting

April 24, 2005 05:35PM
While researching snow fighting on the D&RG and RGS for my book, I found this item on the Uintah:
February 10, 1916
Grand Junction—-Baxter Pass on the Uintah railroad, fifty miles northwest of this city, is the scene of the bitterest fight against a monster snow blockade that the Uintah has been called upon to wage in 14 years. A snow slide forty feed deep in piled upon the track for a distance of 2,700 feet. This is not the worst feature, as the track over Baxter Pass averages 7-1/2 percent for six miles, making a climb of 2,400 feet in that distance and the steepness of the grade makes now bucking a perilous occupation.
