Lots of beating around the bush so here's a direct answer. The locomotives were broken down to boilers, mechanisms, tender tanks and tender trucks. All of this was loaded on several flat cars and shipped to Durango. The engines were then re-assembled at the Durango shops. When they had to have major shopping the reverse would occur for the trip to Alamosa.
What a hassle! I'm sure they were glad to just deal with narrow gauge!
