Swishes w/ No Moving Points *PIC*

December 02, 2004 10:56PM
So in my crude drawing below, if a narrow-gauge train is eastbound then guardrail G1 would push
on the back side of the wheels on the right side of the train which would draw the wheels on the left side over enough to roll onto the frog F1, and guardrail G3 would push on the backs of the left-side wheels to draw the right-side wheels onto frog F3. G2 would act the same way for frog F2 if a narrow-gauge train were westbound. Standard gauge trains would not be affected by any of the guard rails, so - voila' - no moving points!
I keep forgetting that the flangeways in 12"-to-the-foot scale are proportionally a lot narrower than in 1:87 or 1:64, and the wheel treads are wide enough that the outer edges are still riding on the straight rail when the wheels get to the point of the frog, so they would never ride on the flanges. Were there also guard rails as I have shown on the inside of the frog, or not?
p.s. - Pointless swishes must have been inspired not by the mother of invention, Necessity, but by the father. Can you name him?
