East Broad Top 40th Anniversary report

August 13, 2000 01:09PM
Just thought I'd provide some observations of events of yesterday, August 12th, when the East Broad Top railroad put on a little dog and pony show to celebrate its 40th anniversary as a tourist hauler.
Engines 14 and 15 were under steam, both looking good with fresh paint and lettering. Two of the diesels were also on display outisde the roundhouse. Trains were scheduled to run on the hour from 11 to 3, but the orowds were such that trains ran when they were full. The 11:00 ran in two sections; the first was the "regular" passenger consist, while the second featured four flatcars fitted with benches and a caboose. There were walking tours of the roundhouse and shops area, though outside only. There were also two pop cars running back and forth between Meadow Street and the coal wharf, and the handcar was available as well.
All in all, the good folks at Rockhill Furnace put on a credible show, and if as many people rode the trains every day as yesterday, there would be no question about the railroad's continued existence.
Remember, the Fall Spectacular is set for October, and its quite a scene. If you've never done one, make this the year. For details, check out the various websites. Congratulations and best wishes to Joe, Stanley, and all the gang!
