Our first revenue train was run Friday, May 21st. It was two school groups plus the GLR employees on a social and familiarization trip. Trip from Silver Plume to Devil's Gate (Georgetown) was without incident although delayed about ten minutes due to late arrival of one group.
After running around the train at Devil's Gate, Engine #12 (Shay, 1926) decided to cough up her dry pipe packing, necessitating the use of GE diesels 130 and 140 to help us back up the hill.
The packing was a trial of a new substance. It was a unanimous decision - the engine crew didn't care for the acrid smells released by this packing material (reported as a cross between burnt hair, manure, and very old burnt coffee) and Shay #12 likewise was unimpressed and tried her best to get it out of her system. A more traditional-style packing material was located in one of our storage boxcars and will be used to fix the problem. Otherwise, #12 performed flawlessly.
The Silver Plume shop crew worked hard all winter and everything is a go for this season. Former D&RGW double-deck stockcar 5713 is being refurbushed for use in a 4-car extra train in case of overflow crowds this season. The extra will consist of Shay #14 (1916,) D&RGW long caboose 0573, the stockcar, an open gon, and the former Lake tahoe Ry & Navigation coach. Most likely will be run on weekends when needed for extra passenger loads.
