I spent 4 years in the Navy as a photographer and from May of 1957 to May of 1959 I was in Yokuska, Japan in the photo lab. This gave me time to do some railfaning Japan style. I would spend weekends riding the trains, bus or walking the countryside when ever I could. Took many photos but the slide mounts were not good and have for the most part fallen apart and I can not see the photos until I get them remounted.
Japanese steam was still running all over the place and I did get a number of shots of them. The Navy was not happy about railfans going in the rail yards so I did stay away from them, most of the time.
I was also able to visit the small model making "factories" in Tokyo. Most of them were even smaller than a garage that was packed with builders cutting and soldering such beauties as O scale Big Boys and other popular O scale and yes HO models and yes I did buy a few for my self.
My only camera purchase was of a Nikon S-2 that I wish I still had today!
Good times in Japan.
