Rosso;
I love your story! I could learn to love the "purists" - they've provided me a lot of remunerative work.... Someone (maybe you) will have to attend to that door sooner rather than later.
In my industry a consumer wrote a book called "The Forgotten Art of Building a Really Good xxxxx." It extolled an old industry design which supposedly no one but he and his chosen expert knew how to build even though the recommendations were full of misinformation (compared to the original design). The result was a popular book because the salacious title and style appealed to a public who otherwise would never have looked at the industry publications. It further resulted in a resurgence of interest and a lot of work which I would never otherwise have had.
But to this day, industry members who do not know me will confidently say, "I build the
real xxxxx." And questioning them I have never found two who agree, and so far none who has ever researched the original design of which they "know" the "real" way. What is being sold is not good design but pretense of arcane knowledge and general mistrust. Maybe their true purpose is to keep the non expert interest stirred up.
Like others here the only response is to have a good laugh, do the best you can with what you have (both materials and expertise) and enjoy the ride.
