About 13 years ago I replaced the front door and frame on a house in Bath. Six panel, 3'9"x7'6" iirc. The facade faced south, and three hundred years of sun and weather had taken its toll, and I don't think the original door probably hadn't been painted since the 60's. I could have scarfed a repair, but the grain had opened all over and what wasn't rotten just looked tired out. Anyway, there it was, I had the original to copy, and the customer was prepared to pay for the best quality timber so it was an "as new" replacement and I was very pleased with it. The only change was the transom light was double glazed.
The door was then painted with International enamel (9 coats total) in oxford blue, white frame. The original lock was overhauled and the doorknob, knocker, and fingerplate were polished, and all done, it looked the dogs biscuits.
8 years ago, the house was sold. The new owner did not like the colour of the door-it wasn't authentic, and crime of crimes, we hadn't used authentic enamel either, we'd used "modern enamel". She had the door stripped back to bare wood. Not sanded, dipped, which plays hell with hide glue. The door was re-hung, stripped, and that is how it has been left for about 7years now presumably she can't get paint that is authentic enough....The door is beginning to stick now.
