In Google Earth you can draw lines, make placemarks, or draw objects:
and then you can save them as a .KML or .KMZ if you want to use custom placemark icons.
then its just as simple as posting the .kml file here or somewhere on the internet.
This is the format my Silverton Railroads Google earth KML map uses, and if you want to allow people to view the map online without having to download the KML file you can use "Google My Maps" to create it or upload your work to. Its a fairly simple process and among its many uses I'd say documenting railroad routes is one of the best.
