The photograph here: [
digital.denverlibrary.org] provides a prototypical illustration of the door interference. The 3D model (from a game I presume) may exaggerate the problem somewhat since a human can simply lean over to the side so the door frame doesn't block the view so annoyingly. Well, that or close the door. The class 42 (and I think the class 37's and 38's, but photos are scarce) 4-4-0's also had outward-hinged doors that interfered with the pump somewhat, although less visibly due to the smaller boiler diameter letting the pump be mounted a little farther inboard.
As a side note, that 3D model contains some interesting oddities, like the firebox hanging way down through what should be the frame and rear driving axle. I call it interesting because the model has so much detail; it's not badly made and hence such oddities peak my curious side. The "94" (presumably D&RG 94) visible in the earlier shot is similarly odd, with very accurately detailed striping visible but the wrong base color. Makes me wonder if the models were created by modifying other models as is oftentimes the case in computer gaming.
