After my all expense paid tour of the western Pacific headed west from Pearl Harbor, one of our next stops was Sasebo, Japan where I had an opportunity to go into the Navy Exchange and buy a Nikon F body, a 35 mm lens, and a 105 mm lens. I seem to remember the Nikon body cost around $100. Uncle Sam did not rate railroad photography as a high priority activity, but I was able to get away for a few hours to try out my new toy. The branch to Sasebo as well as the mainline to Nagasaki were still steam powered, so I took a taxi to Haiki junction and got these pix of 3'6" steam. The date was November 1963.
The little 2-6-4T's handled a lot of the branch line passenger trains.
As well as some pretty little tender equipped pacific.
I had to get a picture of a Mikado in Japan. This was used on the mainline.
That Nikon F and those lenses served me well for about 40 years.
