I got the chance to go to Como for a couple hours last Saturday (March 14) to install an interpretive sign for the roundhouse;
The new sign in place. Thankfully, the ground was clear of snow in that spot and only the top 6" or so was frozen. The sign came thanks to a grant from the South Park National Heritage Area.
The sign was placed next to the tender side that has been alongside the Como entrance road for many years. One of our first workday projects this year will be to move the fence so that the sign and such are accessible to visitors all the time.
Still lots of snow in Como, the Gunnison Main was blocked by a 5 to 6 foot deep drift about 50 feet long. Time to call out the Rotary!
The turntable pit is full to the brim with an ice/snow mix that has the consistency of reinforced concrete.
Turns out a flatcar makes a dandy snowfence. Sitting on an east/west oriented radial track, 06770 created a precisely flatcar length wide snow drift.
With luck I will have another update from Como next month.
