Greg, it is silver paint. The first two photos show it before it was painted and the third one shows it after it was painted. The D&RGW used a lot of silver trim before WWII. During WWII D&RGW HQ issued an order to stop trimming with silver due to the military needing the silver paint. After the war, they resumed using silver but not as much as before the war. Each D&RGW roundhouse had different ideas of what should be silver. The Gunnison roundhouse did a lot of silver trim. As the K-37s were based out of Salida and Gunnison until 1950, they had a bit more silver trim than the K-36s. There are photos of K-37s with the silver edge on the pilot plows, so the D&S is following D&RGW practice.
