Just because its stripped of parts doesn't mean it's in bad shape. 498 was stored serviceable in 1968 inside the Alamosa RH along with 493 where they sat until 1981 when the D&SNG bought them. Don't be fooled by appearances today--all it would need is the parts put back on along with a rebuild like any other locomotive would require after sitting idle for so long. I would venture to say that the boiler on 498 is in better shape than any of the operable locomotives on the D&SNG or C&TS except maybe the 476 which recently had a major rebuild.
