IIRC, standard railroad gauge – obviously adopted by Ford Motor Co. as a reasonable spacing between wheels – dates back to the spacing of the earliest tracks to fit the ruts left in the earliest roads in Britain by Roman Chariots, which in turn were designed to be pulled by a pair of horses. Thus one might say that the width of modern autos – or at least those of roughly fifty years ago – was determined by a pair of horses' asses.
