IIRC 2003 was the year it held down the job alone. Amazing that it could be done. A real testament to the durability of 487, and the crew that year that kept her operating. Also brings up a cautionary tale about how quickly things can go to pot. in 1994 I believe there were 6 locos operable. 463, 484, 487, 488, 489, 497, but it took less than 10 years to get to just one. How does that happen? Obviously a perfect storm of new regulations, track issues, Kyle leaving, 2002 fire, but how does it get there?
I commend those who are running it now. Ridership is nowhere near what it was in the late 90s, yet they're getting it done.
