Per Russo Loco comment on 4449 in a snow storm on Union Pacific's steep Blue Mountain crossing - here is a photo taken just a little earlier. The AFT had taken the siding at Hilgard, Oregon to let an eastbound freight pass, and is pulling back on to the main. As for telephone poles, they had been conveniently placed on the south side of the track. I hope that 4014 will make a trip to Oregon next year.
In regards to 4449 running along the Columbia River - I don't believe I have photos of the American Freedom Train running along the Columbia, but some of my favorite scenes of 4449 steaming on the SP&S route to Wishram were taken on the initial break-in and load hauling demonstration with an AFT-equivalent 2,400 ton freight in 1974. A sampling of photos is attached.
Approaching Cascade Locks just before passing under the Bridge of the Gods
Passing Horse Thief Butte with Mt. Hood in the background
4449 turning on the wye at Wishram, actually the bridge leading to the Deschutes River route to Bend and Chemult, Oregon (Oregon Trunk).
Heading back to Portland at 60 mph, with the chase pack in hot pursuit
