483 and 492 took a train of 70 empties up Bocea Hill after the 6 week shutdown,in August 1966, struggling up the 2 percent grade. To make matters even more challenging "rogue" Ohio railfan Jim Marcus set up his movie camera about a mile above Carbon Junction and oiled the rails to film the engines spinning out. After many attempts to get past the oiled area and using up their sand supply, the train backed to Carbon Junction. Crews brought sand bags from Durango to re-fill the sand domes and brought extra bags of sand that were placed on the running boards. On the next attempt the train made it past the oiled area. An attempt at revenge came the next day in the canyon between Dulce and Navajo, when Jim Marcus tried to pass the westbound train on the adjacent dirt road and engineer Andy Paine did a boiler blowdown, with instant zero visibility. Unfortunately I was following Jim's car and was also caught in the whiteout. All I could do was to slam on the brakes and hope to avoid the train on the left and the rocky cliff on the right. Luckily early termination was avoided for both Jim Marcus and myself. I can't say that I was an Andy Payne fan after this incident. I am planning a future post covering the August 1966 return of narrow gauge operations, now that I have my slides from that time scanned.
