Thanks Dave and Bruce. The train appears even closer to the highway 62 crossing than I would have guessed. There is a hill just east of the crossing that must be the viewpoint for the photo, I just didn't think it was high enough for such a spectacular elevated scene. Spencer doesn't give the name of the photographer, but from the hike/scramble required it looks like something Ernie Robart might have done. I will try to find out. Ernie's 1965-1966 negatives are yet to be scanned. All kinds of treasures are likely to be discovered in the next year or so, thanks to the FRIENDS archive team.
Just as an aside.... my first reaction to the photo was that it might be a train descending the draw west of Allison, approaching the bridge at La Boca, but I quickly discarded that idea because of the mountains in the background. Come to think of it, that draw is another of the "dark" places on the narrow gauge that has probably never been photographed.
