It could be 476 on the second train. I thought 473 got a diamond stack during that repaint and such before 63? Remember those Holmes shots Earl???
Also just because a slide has a month on it, that doesn't mean that is when it was shot. I am guessing that the second sections started in June, and thus this is June 1963, and by the time you got home, got the money, and sent the slides in for processing they came back with July date stamps. I know back in those days it took time to get mail to and from the processing places also. Travel time home and other parts of the vacation after the train ride, plus the factors I mention could easily add up to two weeks or more. Just a thought.
Some old Narrow Gauge News from that time might be helpful to get the answer on the date. As you say it should be documented someplace.
Also back in those days summer vacation did not begin until the Memorial Day weekend, so the tourist traffic for the railroad probably picked up considerably around the middle or end of June. Another vote for June.
