Anybody interested in the early years of the White Pass should get a copy of a little booklet called "Our Summer in Alaska, 1917" by Huberta Swensen. Huberta and her brother spent part of the summer of 1917 visiting their grandparents who ran a small station along the line. The small book (only 50 pages) recalls her adventures, including a lot of interaction with the railroad section crews, and travelling the line. It's probably been fifteen or twenty years since I read it, but I remember it being a unique insight to life on the line. Unlike Roy Minter's "The White Pass - Gateway to the Klondike" (also a must read for anyone interested in construction and early operation of the line), it doesn't have a lot of historical details on construction or operation, but it gives a very different perspective that most people can relate to.
ABE Books lists several copies for under $10.
