The WW&F is expecting to to lay about 2000 feet of track - and spike by hand / spike mauls - during its 4 day Fall Work Weekend (October 11-14). Expectations are that there will be a lot of volunteers participating in this event, the Spring Work Weekend had more than 100 people participate.
While WW&F spiking is done by hand, the WW&F is not totally opposed to "modern"
technology - the rail laying gantry is rather unique in this day and age.
Note that this photo does not show the spiking crew, they are not visible here as that crew is behind the gantry train. Temporary gauge clamps are applied to the newly laid rails to allow the gantry to pass and the spiking crew to work clear of the gantry train.
