Fuzzybusted,
The merger steps actually went like this...
1. The D&RGW (a Delaware Corp.) bought what was left of the SPCompany (a Kentucky Corp.) after the SPSF gutting.
2. The D&RGW changed their name to Southern Pacific (still a Delaware Corp.).
3. Union Pacific (a Utah Corp.) merged with the SP (the Delaware Corp.). However, because of all of the business advantages of being a Delaware Corp., the UP dissolved the Utah Corp. and changed the SP name to UP. So, after all is said and done, the original Delaware Corp, aka the original D&RGW, is the sole survivor.
So much for corporate pride, loyalty, etc. It's merely corporate expediency.
As for the logos, I agree that the logos that they have kept current (the two UP shields mentioned before) should probably have a royalty paid. BUT... to try to take something back that has been previously left to the Public Domain is just plain WRONG. It is being done not for corporate protection but for pure and simple greed. It sets a dangerous legal precedent for any scurrlious individual wanting to "cash in" on a historical entity, Transportation, Goods or whatever related.
Rick
