Hi John,
I usually travel on Southwest Airlines, which has service into ABQ. Although Southwest sells non-refundable tickets like every other airline, their policy is a bit unique in that you can cancel a flight and "bank" the associated funds for use within one year of the original ticket purchase date. If I run into a situation in which the trip looks iffy, I know that all is not lost and I can just move the money to a future trip. So far at least, I have never lost money on Southwest. No airline is perfect, but they are pretty damn good.
I concur on the Narrow Gauge Rendezvous back in 2016. I wasn't quite sure what to expect on that event, and came home with a ton of great pictures. That was a really nice time.
