Ridgway October Goose Gathering

March 20, 2019 02:30PM
The Ridgway (Colorado) Railroad Museum will be hosting a Gathering Of The Flock at our new facility on October 12 and 13, 2019. Geese 4 and 5 will join Motor 1 and be carrying passengers around our 0.53-mile operations loop both days. While we are a free museum, for this special event, there will be a $5 adults charge for a day pass that will allow railfans unlimited rides on the Geese each day. Rides should be around 10 minutes each (three laps around our loop). In addition, all other museum facilities will be open with docents on site, we will host guided hikes along the Silverton Railroad railbed on Red Mountain on Thursday and Friday (weather permitting), and board member Don Paulson will host an open house at his extensive HOn3 layout on Saturday morning. Museum president Karl Schaeffer will present a lecture on "RGS Motors and Galloping Geese" on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

This event replaces our usual September Railroad Days for 2019. It is being held this particular weekend to correspond with an Old West Fest weekend presented by the town, which will have a wide variety of Western-themed events focusing on the 50th anniversary of the release of the original True Grit (the John Wayne version), which was filmed in and around Ridgway in 1968 and released in 1969. Old West events will include screening of both True Grit movies, guided tours of the in-town and out-of-town film locations, western music, art, and more.

For more information, check our website www.ridgwayrailroadmuseum.org, and google Ridgway Old West Fest - they should have a website up within a couple of weeks.

This will be the first time that full-sized Geese have carried passengers in Ridgway in 68 years.
