We have a winner, sort of -

Laziness, a distinctly male trait (at least according to many females), is indeed the Father of Invention.  I can't begin to imagine how many things were invented 'cause some lazy guy wanted to get 'er done easier & quicker so he could clock out and go get a beer (or three).

OTOH, in his explanation Bruce mentions "need", which – IMHO – is much closer to 'necessity' than 'laziness' . . .
